May is National Arthritis Awareness Month

Arthritis—or joint inflammation—is a common chronic disease and a leading cause of disability worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 54 million Americans have some form of arthritis. In fact, there are over 100 different types. People with arthritis often experience pain, fatigue, numbness, loss of function, and mobility issues, leading to activity or work limitations. If left untreated, these symptoms can progress or worsen over time and cause severe damage to the joints in the body and even disability.

People with arthritis are also at risk of becoming socially isolated. It’s important to take any changes in your feet or other body parts seriously and see a doctor right away. Although a common condition, arthritis is not very well understood.

WHO CAN GET ARTHRITIS?

Arthritis knows no gender, race, creed, or age, and therefore it can happen to anyone, even children. Some of the most common causes of arthritis include wear and tear of the joints due to aging, injuries, genetics, infection around the joint area, and high levels of uric acid in the body.

EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT IS KEY

An accurate diagnosis is the first step towards the successful treatment of arthritis. It’s important to consult a podiatrist at the first signs of any pain, swelling, or stiffness in one or more joints of your feet. Early treatment yields the best results. It can prevent cartilage damage and other serious complications. Treatment may vary depending on the type of arthritis and its cause. Your podiatrist may recommend orthotics, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, and even surgery to relieve pain, increase foot function, and bring arthritis into remission.
